About this checker

How is the reading grade level calculated?

We use the Flesch-Kincaid grade level formula, which combines average sentence length and average syllables per word. A score of 8 means a typical 8th grader can read the text comfortably.

Is my text stored?

No. This checker runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to our servers.

What is vocabulary variety?

It's the share of different words in every 50-word stretch of text (moving-average type-token ratio). Higher means less repetition. Most strong student essays land between 65% and 80%.

Does a lower grade level mean a worse essay?

Not at all. Clear writing often scores lower. Use the grade level to check the text suits its audience, and use a rubric to judge quality.

Want feedback, not just numbers?

RubricPal grades the essay against a rubric and comments on every paragraph. Try 5 essays free.
