Why RubricPal Doesn't Include an AI Detector
AI writing detectors produce false positives, especially for English learners. Here's why we focus on feedback instead, and what to do about AI use.
AI can read an essay against a rubric in seconds and point to the exact sentences that need work. Used well, it gives students faster, more detailed feedback than any teacher can write by hand for 120 essays. Used badly, it hands out grades no one checked. Here's how to stay on the right side of that line.
What AI feedback is good at
- Applying the same rubric consistently to essay #1 and essay #120.
- Spotting surface issues: run-on sentences, missing apostrophes, vague words, unattributed quotes.
- Checking structure: is there a thesis, does each paragraph have a job, does the conclusion do more than repeat?
- Drafting a clear, encouraging note to the student that you can edit.
What it is not good at
- Knowing your students: the one who finally wrote a full page, or the one who copied last year's prompt.
- Judging originality of thought in a way that always matches yours.
- Detecting whether a student used AI (more on that below).
Five rules for using it well
- Always review before sharing. Treat the AI as a teaching assistant. Read the scores and the reasoning; adjust anything you disagree with.
- Use your rubric. Generic scores are less useful than scores against the criteria you taught.
- Demand evidence. A good tool quotes the essay to justify each score, so you can verify it in seconds.
- Protect student data. Pick a tool that doesn't train on student work and lets you delete it. Use initials if you prefer.
- Tell students. Explain that feedback is drafted with AI and reviewed by you. Transparency builds trust.
A note on AI detectors
Detecting AI-written text is a different problem from giving feedback, and current detectors are unreliable. We explain why we chose not to build one in this post.
